How the Hijri calendar works
The Hijri calendar is lunar. Each month starts with the new crescent moon and has 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That's why Ramadan and the Eids move about 11 days earlier every year and travel through all the seasons over roughly 33 years.
Years are counted from the Hijrah, the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, and are marked AH (Anno Hegirae).
Umm al-Qura vs moon sighting
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which Saudi Arabia uses for official and civil dates. Its months are calculated in advance from astronomical rules, so every date can be converted exactly.
Many communities start Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha only after the new moon is actually seen, locally or in Saudi Arabia. Those dates can be a day different from the calculated calendar. For religious occasions, follow your local mosque or authority; for documents, contracts and planning, Umm al-Qura is the standard reference.
