How your age is counted
The calculator counts the way people do. First the whole years since your birth, then the whole months after your last birthday, then the days left over. So if you were born on 15 March 1998, on 10 October 2026 you are 28 years, 6 months and 25 days old.
Short months are handled like a calendar would handle them. If you were born on the 31st, a month later is the last day of the next month. If you were born on 29 February, your birthday counts as 28 February in years that aren't leap years.
How to calculate your age by hand
Take the same example: born 15 March 1998, age on 10 October 2026.
- Years: 2026 minus 1998 is 28. The birthday (15 March) has already passed this year, so keep 28. If it hadn't, you would take one off.
- Months: count whole months from the last birthday, 15 March 2026. 15 September is 6 months later, and 15 October hasn't arrived yet, so 6 months.
- Days: count from 15 September to 10 October. September has 30 days, so that is 15 days to the end of September plus 10 in October, 25 days.
- Result: 28 years, 6 months and 25 days. The days step is where most hand calculations go wrong, because the month you borrow from can have 28, 29, 30 or 31 days.
Age in days, weeks and hours
Total days is every calendar day from your birth date to the 'age on' date, including each 29 February in between. Weeks are those days divided by seven, rounded down. Hours are days times 24, counted from midnight to midnight, because a date of birth doesn't include the time you were born.
Total months counts every whole month since birth, so 28 years and 6 months is 342 months.
Different ways of counting age
- Completed years: the international way, and what this calculator shows. You turn one on your first birthday. Passports, ID cards and exam forms use this.
- 'Lagyo' age in Nepal: people often say the year they are in rather than the years they've finished. '27 lagyo' means 26 completed years.
- East Asian age reckoning: a baby counts as one at birth and everyone gains a year at the new year. South Korea switched its legal and administrative age to completed years in June 2023.
Born in the Nepali calendar?
Many birth dates in Nepal are recorded in Bikram Sambat. Choose 'Born in BS', enter the year, month and day, and the calculator converts it to the English calendar before working out your age. It uses the same verified calendar data as the Nepali Date Converter, covering 2000 to 2083 BS.
Handy uses
- Forms and exams: check whether you meet an age limit on a specific date, like the last day to apply. Exam and job notices in Nepal often set the limit on a BS cut-off date, so enter that date in 'Age on'.
- Visas and travel: some forms want age on the date of travel, not today. Change the 'Age on' date.
- Milestones: find the day you turn 10,000 days old, or how many weeks old a baby is.
- Retirement and pensions: see exactly how far you are from a cut-off age.
