How the Nepali calendar works
Nepal's official calendar is Bikram Sambat (BS, विक्रम संवत्). It runs about 56 years and 8 months ahead of the English calendar, so 2083 BS mostly overlaps 2026 AD. The new year, 1 Baishakh, falls around 13 or 14 April.
The tricky part is month length. English months always have the same number of days. Nepali months don't. Each one has 29 to 32 days, and the pattern changes from year to year because it follows the sun's movement through the zodiac. That's why you can't convert BS to AD with a simple formula. You need the actual calendar for each year.
Where the data comes from
This converter uses a table of month lengths for every year from 2000 to 2083 BS. I checked it against three separate open-source Nepali calendar libraries and only kept the years where all three agree, day for day. Every one of the roughly 30,600 days in that range converts both ways and back again in the tests.
Years after 2083 BS aren't included yet. Their month lengths are set by Nepal's calendar committee (Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti) about a year ahead, and different sources still disagree. Rather than guess, the converter tells you when a date is outside the range it can vouch for.
The 12 Nepali months
- Baishakh (बैशाख): mid-April to mid-May
- Jestha (जेठ): mid-May to mid-June
- Ashadh (असार): mid-June to mid-July
- Shrawan (साउन): mid-July to mid-August
- Bhadra (भदौ): mid-August to mid-September
- Ashwin (असोज): mid-September to mid-October
- Kartik (कात्तिक): mid-October to mid-November
- Mangsir (मंसिर): mid-November to mid-December
- Poush (पुस): mid-December to mid-January
- Magh (माघ): mid-January to mid-February
- Falgun (फागुन): mid-February to mid-March
- Chaitra (चैत): mid-March to mid-April
When you'll need it
- Documents: citizenship, passport and many government forms in Nepal use BS dates, while visas and foreign forms want AD.
- Birthdays: lots of people in Nepal know their birthday only in BS. Convert it once to get the English date for this year.
- School and job applications: date of birth and SLC/SEE dates often need to be given in both calendars.
- Planning: festivals, exams and fiscal-year deadlines are announced in BS. Nepal's fiscal year starts on 1 Shrawan.

BS year to AD year
A BS year covers parts of two AD years. 2083 BS runs from 14 April 2026 to mid-April 2027, so a date in Baishakh to Poush is in 2026, and a date in late Poush, Magh, Falgun or Chaitra is in 2027. The quick rule: subtract 57 for Baishakh to mid-Poush, and 56 for the rest of the year. For an exact day, use the converter, since the switch happens around 1 January, partway through Poush.
Nepal's fiscal year runs from 1 Shrawan, which fell on 17 July in 2026 (2083 BS).
